Heavy rains lash Vellore and Kanchi

Heavy rains lashed parts of North Tamil Nadu on Wednesday due to convection activity, bringing respite to the parched state.

While Chennai received slight drizzles of 1 cm, parts of Vellore, Kancheepuram and the city outskirts received heavy rains. Though significant rains were not recorded in the city, except in the outskirts, there was a marginal dip in the temperature.

According to the data from the India Meteorological Department, Alangayam station in Vellore recorded 9cm and Uthiramerur in Kancheepuram recorded 11cm.

“Showers would be witnessed throughout the north Tamil Nadu due to convection activity. The sky condition would generally be cloudy,” said officials from Regional Meteorological Centre.

Weather experts attribute the cause of rainfall to the convection activity. Explaining, weather blogger, S Chandramouli told DC that “Moisture winds from west coast converge with the sea breeze at Tamil Nadu coast, due to which instability is created, resulting in the formation of the frontal thunderstorm.”

He said that the convective rainfall would continue till September, though not in regular intervals. “The presence of dry winds could also be witnessed,” Chandramouli added.

Meanwhile, temperature in the Northern Tamil Nadu districts decreased. Chennai’s Nungambakkam recorded 33.6 degrees on Wednesday, which is 3.9 degrees below the normal temperature. The airport station which has been seeing abnormal temperatures recorded 33.2 degrees – 4.7 degrees below normal.
