Agra-based lawyer Ramashankar Sharma moved a local court seeking registration of a sedition case against actor Kangana Ranaut over her comment that what India gained in 1947 was not Independence but ‘bheekh’ (alms).

According to sources, the CJM (chief judicial magistrate) court in Agra sought a report from the New Agra police station in this regard. The court has fixed November 25 as the date for the hearing of the case.

Defending his plea against Kangana Ranaut, Ramashankar Sharma told India Today that the actor insulted India and the freedom fighters who laid down their lives for the country. The lawyer got support from local activists, who took on Kangana Ranaut saying the actor needed a deeper reading of history.

Sameer, an Agra-based social activist said Kangana Ranaut should read the history of the country’s Independence again and from unbiased sources. Hundreds of people sacrificed their lives to bring an end to the British rule in India.

Hindustani Biradari vice president Vishal Sharma said, “Kangana Ranaut is just a film actress, not an expert on history and her opinion about the country’s Independence does not have any academic significance.”

Sharma said whatever Kangana Ranaut said about the country’s Independence could be her personal belief. The more it is repeated on a public forum, the more Kangana Ranaut would become the subject of discussion, Sharma said.
