An elephant calf that fell into a ditch of a tea garden in Assam’s Jorhat district was rescued by locals and forest officials.

The incident took place at Dahingeapar tea garden on Sunday where an elephant calf which was separated from a herd, fell into a ditch.

According to the locals, an elephant herd came out from nearby Holongapar Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary and entered into the area for searching food and the elephant calf which was separated from the herd fell into the ditch.

When some locals noticed the incident they immediately informed local forest officials.

Many villagers gathered at the spot and engaged to rescue the elephant calf from the ditch.

Later, locals and forest officials safely rescued the elephant calf.

Wild Asiatic elephants are primarily found in India and some parts of South East Asia and Assam is home to over 5000 Asiatic elephants.
