Coronavirus India News Live Updates: The government has come out with comprehensive guidelines for the management of COVID-19 among children in which Remdesivir has not been recommended and rational use of HRCT imaging has been suggested. The guidelines issued by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) under the health ministry also said that steroids are harmful in asymptomatic and mild cases of infection. The DGHS recommended steroids only in hospitalised moderately severe and critically ill COVID-19 cases under strict supervision. The guidelines also said Remdesivir (an emergency use authorization drug) is not recommended in children.

Mizoram reports record 347 new COVID-19 cases, tally at 14,534Mizoram on Thursday registered its highest single-day spike of 347 fresh COVID-19 cases, which took the tally in the state to 14,534, an official said. Of the new cases, 246 were reported from Aizawl district, followed by 50 from Kolasib, 31 from Lawngtlai and 12 from Lunglei. The remaining cases were recorded in several other districts. As many as 81 children are among the new patients, the official said. Thirteen new coronavirus-positive people have travel history, while others were detected during contact tracing, he said. Of the 347 patients, 188 have developed symptoms of COVID-19. According to the official, the single-day infection rate was at 10.39 percent as the new cases were detected from 3,337 sample tests. Mizoram now has 3,585 active cases, and at least 122 people were cured of the disease on Wednesday, taking the total number of recoveries to 10,891.

14 new cases push COVID-19 tally of Andamans to 7,168

The COVID-19 caseload in Andaman and Nicobar Islands rose to 7,168 as 14 more people tested positive for the disease in the Union Territory, a health department official said on Thursday. Of the new patients, four have travel history and 10 were detected during contact tracing, he said. The death toll remained at 125 as no new fatality due to the infection was reported in the last 24 hours. At least 17 more people were cured of the disease during the period, taking the total number of recoveries in the archipelago to 6,952. The Union Territory now has 91 active cases. South Andaman is the worst-affected district as it currently has 87 active cases.

The Central government has not recommended Remdesivir, rational use of HRCT imaging and steroids for the treatment of COVID-19 among children below 18 years of age. The guidelines were issued by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). “There is a lack of sufficient safety and efficacy data with respect to Remdesivir in children below 18 years of age,” the guidelines said. 

The Nainital High Court directs the Central government to provide an uninterrupted supply of life-saving medicines to Uttarakhand. The court also directed the state government to organize district-level campaigns for vaccination of weaker sections of society, who could not get vaccinated due to lack of an ID.

The 2-deoxy-D-glucose (2-DG) COVID-19 drug, developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation’s (DRDO) Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Allied Sciences (INMAS) and Dr Reddy’s Laboratories, will be available at a price of Rs 990 per sachet. One sachet contains 2.34gm of drug in water soluble powder form and it is to be taken orally. Dubbed as the affordable COVID-19 drug since the beginning of its trial, the steep pricing of the anti-viral drug has now attracted criticism.

After almost eight months of negotiations, the World Trade Organization’s (WTO) TRIPS Council has agreed on text-based negotiations on the TRIPS waiver proposal moved by India and backed by over 60 nations. “TRIPS Council has agreed with consensus to go ahead with text-based negotiations on our TRIPS waiver proposal. Countries which had opposed or sought more time to consider text-based negotiations have removed their blockade,” said an Indian official requesting anonymity. The decision was taken on Wednesday after a two-day meeting of the TRIPS Council.

Delhi govt team hails ‘Mumbai model’ of COVID-19 management, BMC’s ‘exemplary’ work

A Delhi government team lauded the work done by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to tackle the coronavirus pandemic, and announced that the ‘Mumbai model’ of curbing the infection cases will be implemented in the national capital soon. The BMC said this in a statement issued on Wednesday. The Delhi government team comprising senior officials of the Delhi government’s health department, Dr Sanjay Agarwal and Dr Dharmendra Kumar, paid a visit to Mumbai recently to study the steps taken by the BMC. During the visit, the team discussed various issues, including decentralisation achieved through Ward War Rooms, successful management of oxygen supply and jumbo hospitals set up in a short span of time, the BMC said in the release.

Over 24 crore COVID-19 vaccine doses administered in country so far, says Union Health Ministry

Andhra Pradesh: A total of 1,955 black fungus (mucormycosis) cases reported in the state to date. Of which, 114 infected patients have died. Currently, there are 1,301 active cases of black fungus, says state Medical & Health Principal Secretary Anil Kumar Singhal.
