The Delhi Police has been fined Rs 25,000 by a court in Delhi for “miserably failing” in their duty to investigate cases related to the February 2020 riots in north-east Delhi.

The court noted that in one of the FIRs pertaining to the Delhi riots cases, the Delhi Police conducted the investigation in a “most casual, callous and farcical manner”.

The additional sessions judge in the Karkardooma Court was hearing a revision plea filed by the Delhi Police challenging a previous order. The order had directed them to register a separate FIR of one Mohd Nasir who had received injuries during the riots.

NORTH-EAST DELHI RIOTS, FEB 2020

On February 23, 2020, communal violence broke out in Delhi’s Jafrabad and spread across northeast Delhi over the next four days. This came against the backdrop of the passing of the Centre’s controversial Citizenship Amendment Act and the resultant widespread protests against it.

At least 53 people lost their lives and 581 were injured in the violence that ensued. Shops and houses were burnt and destroyed.

While the capital burnt, the Delhi Police faced criticism for ineffective handling of the riots.
