Malayalam cinema has had a great innings during the Covid-19 pandemic as many people discovered its talent, thanks to OTT. The success of movies, like Minnal Murali, C U Soon, The Great Indian Kitchen, Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey, Jana Gana Mana, Thallumaala, and Hridayam, in non-Malayalam speaking regions proved that stories matter and good content and performances are what the people want.
Here’s a look at five exciting films that are coming from Mollywood in 2023.
KING OF KOTHA
This movie stars Dulquer Salmaan and is an out-and-out gangster flick. Written by Abhilash Joshiy and Abhilash N, this flick, directed by Abhilash Joshiy, is set to release in March this year. Aishwarya Lekshmi, Shabeer Kallarakkal, Gokul Suresh and Ritika Singh are part of the cast.
High expectations are on for this film since it is helmed by renowned filmmaker Joshiy’s son. Malayalam superstar Mohanlal is an actor sans pareil and now he is directing a very ambitious project titled Barroz: Guardian of Treasures – 3D. This fantasy movie is meant for children, but adults are likely to enjoy it just as much. The filming began in 2021 but because of the Covid-19 pandemic, it was held up.
The movie revolves around Barroz (Mohanlal), who has been assigned to protect Vasco Da Gama’s treasure for more than 400 years. Barroz has to hand over the treasure to Gama’s descendants and this is where the twist lies. The film has been extensively shot in Goa and Thailand. Mohanlal recently announced that the film would release by March 2023.
Prithviraj Sukumaran is known to find different types of stories and, with Aadujeevitham, he seems to have found another gem. This movie is a survival drama and Prithviraj lost around 24 kg to portray a man who was emaciated. Najeeb Muhammad (Prithviraj) is a migrant worker from India who ends up in the wilderness of Saudi Arabia after being tortured and forced to look after sheep.
Directed by Blessy, the movie has all the makings of a gripping drama. No release date has been announced for this project, although the film was wrapped up in July 2022.
Anushka Shetty will be seen with Suresh Gopi and Biju Menon in this film directed by Mathews Thomas. Kuruvachan (Suresh Gopi) is said to be a family man and trader hailing from Pala. Shot in Pala, Kochi, Mangalore and Malaysia, the movie seems to be a family drama with plenty of action.
The director has revealed that there is plenty of family sentiments for the audience and some superb action has been woven into this.
LUCIFER 2: EMPURAAN
When Prithviraj Sukumaran directed Lucifer with Mohanlal, he would not have imagined that it would become so big. The movie was remade in many other Indian languages. Now, he and Mohanlal are back together for Lucifer 2 and, this time, the film is said to be much bigger.
Lucifer 2 is titled L2: Empuraan and features Manju Warrier, Tovino Thomas, Saikumar and Baiju Santhosh. The movie is said to go on floors in mid 2023 and will be shot mostly abroad. This is the second instalment in the Lucifer franchise, which will conclude with part three. L2 should hopefully be released by the end of 2023. But, the filmmakers have yet to announce any date.
