Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) has signed midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum on a free transfer after leaving Premier League side Liverpool on a three-year deal, the French Ligue 1 side announced on Thursday.

Wijnaldum has played 237 games over five seasons and scored 22 goals for Liverpool in all competitions, lifting the Premier League, Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, and the FIFA Club World Cup titles.

“Signing for PSG is a new challenge for me,” Wijnaldum told the club’s website.

“I’m joining one of the best squads in Europe, and I want to bring all my desire and commitment to this ambitious project.

“PSG have proved how good they are in recent years, and I’m convinced that together, with our supporters, we can go even further and higher,” he added.

Wijnaldum is a versatile midfielder, and he also doubled as an emergency center half during Liverpool’s injury-hit campaign this season.

PSG is looking to strengthen its squad after failing to win the French title as Lille delivered one of European soccer’s biggest upsets in recent seasons. Also, PSG was knocked out in the Champions League semifinals by Manchester City.

The club recently persuaded Neymar to sign a new long-term contract. Still, prolific forward Kylian Mbappe is hesitating over a new deal, and his contract expires at the end of next season.

The versatile Wijnaldum signed for Liverpool from fellow Premier League side Newcastle United for 23 million pounds ($32.52 million) in 2016 and was a key figure in the Anfield side’s domestic and European successes.

Wijnaldum, who was hailed by manager Juergen Klopp in March as his “most consistent player”, featured in every league game as Liverpool secured a third-placed finish last season and qualified for the Champions League.

His five-year spell at Anfield will end when his contract expires on June 30.

“Nobody can take our memories from us,” Klopp said in a statement on Liverpool’s website. “We will share them forever, and that’s really great.”

Wijnaldum will captain the Netherlands at the European Championships in the absence of injured defender Virgil van Dijk.
