During the campaign for the new representative of the West Bengal government this time, many popular names from the world of Bengali entertainment had joined the field. While Bengali actresses such as Nusrat Jahan and Mimi Chakraborty have been prominent faces of Trinamool Congress (TMC), Srabonti Chatterjee joined BJP this election. With many artistes joining politics too, we wondered if one of the most popular faces in Bengali cinema, Parambrata Chatterjee would ever join West Bengal politics, or better, if he plans to be a part in the near or far-off future.

In an exclusive interaction with Times Now Digital, Parambrata Chatterjee not only opened up about his views on joining politics but also shared insights on being politically vocal, whether or not he chooses a political pedestal to do so.

We asked Parambrata Chatterjee if he has any plans to join West Bengal politics. He replied:

“I am not so sure, to be honest. I always believe that civil society members, artistes… it should be a part of their practice to be politically vocal but that doesn’t mean that they need to join active politics. I think the moment you join active politics because you need to be politically vocal, you kind of feed into the narrative that actors and artistes and painters and musicians, they are only entertainers, they should just keep their acts together, keep doing what they are known for and not be worried about society, history or politics or the reality around you in general.”

He furthermore added:

“And I do not whatsoever wish to feed to that narrative. I believe that as an individual, a free citizen of an ideally free country, I am entitled to an opinion and not only that but I am entitled to expressing it as well. And I cannot be penalised for that. And my opinion matters as much as anybody else’s. And I should be able to voice that without belonging to any particular political party. Especially for people who work with the mind and the heart, and the head; people who are from the world of art, science, I think they need to speak up when it comes to it. And for that, I do not believe in having to need a certain political pedestal.”

Parambrata concluded by saying that if however, if somebody wants to join politics, that’s their call, “an individual’s own.”

On the movie front, the actor has been receiving good reviews for his OTT platform Hoichoi-released film Tangra Blues. He is also busy with his directorial debut Abhijaan, which is based on the life of Bengali legend late Soumitra Chatterjee. Apart from Bengali films, Parambrata has co-starred with Anushka Sharma in Pari and Vidya Balan in Kahaani.
