Harbhajan Singh congratulated Ravichandran Ashwin after the latter overtook him on the list of India’s highest Test wicket-takers. Ashwin went level with Harbhajan on 417 wickets when he dismissed New Zealand opener Will Young in the closing stages of Day 4 of the first Test in Kanpur. He then took his 418th wicket in the form of Young’s opening partner Tom Latham on Day 5.

“Congratulations @ashwinravi99 wish you many more brother.. God bless.. keep shining,” said Harbhajan on Twitter.

Harbhajan said that he did whatever he could to win matches for India when he played and it is exactly what Ashwin is doing now. The 41-year-old is yet to officially announce his retirement from the game at any level but he last played a Test match for India in August 2015 in Galle against Sri Lanka. His last international match was against the UAE in the 2016 Asia Cup in March 2016.

“Wish he wins many more matches for the country. I never believed in comparisons. I did my best for the country during my time and Ashwin has done his best during his,” Harbhajan told PTI.

Ashwin is now 16 wickets away from overtaking former India captain Kapil Dev and becoming the second highest wicket-taker for India. However, he is a fair distance away from overtaking his former India head coach Anil Kumble, who retired in 2008 with a whopping 619 wickets to his name in 132 Test matches.

Ashwin is the fourth Indian bowler to take more than 400 wickets in Test cricket. He also became the 13th highest Test wicket-taker of all time. He jumped past Pakistan fast bowling great Wasim Akram (414) as well apart from Harbhajan on the list.

Among active Test cricketers, Ashwin is the third highest wicket taker after England fast bowling duo Stuart Broad (524) and James Anderson (632).
