Skincare is an ever-evolving industry owing to diverse tastes and requirements. As the concept of clean and sustainable beauty is becoming more mainstream, niche ingredients like hemp have caught the eye of the people. Touted as THE solution for healthy hair and skin, cold-pressed hemp seed oil has been gaining prominence and is the next big trend waiting to happen.

India Today spoke to researcher Dr Neeraj K. Patel and dermatologist Dr Vaibhav Mehta on why hemp seed oil could be amazing for your skin’s health.

The use of hemp in wellness is not a novel innovation. As a matter of fact, hemp has been a part of Indian culture and beauty regimes for centuries. It has been used extensively by the Himalayan communities for its hydrating, nutritional, and rejuvenating properties.

The oil is rich in omega fatty acids, antioxidants, vitamins & minerals and offers excellent nourishment for the skin. Plant-based and non-toxic, the use of hemp is rooted in Ayurveda, providing an organic and sustainable way to give the skin the glow it needs.

“Hemp seed oil is increasingly gaining prominence for its many wondrous properties, especially for skincare. IT IS Perfect for most skin types, the oil is a natural moisturizer and hydrator, helping balance out oily skin through its non-comedogenic and oil-regulating properties” said, Dr Vaibhav Mehta, Anti-Ageing & Aesthetic Medicine Specialist, Advanced Skin Care Expert.

‘Hemp seed oil contains omega-3 and omega-6. Along with gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), they work to reduce inflammation and soothe the skin. Often, skin rashes and inflammation are caused due to deficiencies in vitamin D and omega-6 fatty acids.

Hemp seed oil can prove to be quite helpful here and can help in managing skin ailments like eczema, dermatitis, psoriasis, and varicose eczema among others, by reducing redness, itching, and inflammation, leaving the skin hydrated and healthy’ said Neeraj K. Patel, head Research & Development, Bombay Hemp Company.

“Not to be confused with CBD oil that is extracted from hemp leaves, the hemp seed oil is made from cold-pressing hemp seeds and is effectively being used as an important ingredient in various skin and hair products (apart from its proven uses for dietary needs/requirements)” Dr Mehta said.

The abundance of antioxidants such as vitamins A and C in this oil, along with fatty acids, strengthens the outer layer of the skin and provides protection from inflammation and oxidation. This keeps the skin looking firm and hydrated, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles among other causes of aging. The oil even promotes the growth of healthy skin cells, making the skin youthful and radiant.

This omega-rich oil is a moisturising hero. The properties of hemp in the oil contribute to repairing the skin barrier and forming a protective layer that retains moisture within. Additionally, hemp seed oil is known to be a humectant, which means it attracts moisture, keeping your skin healthy and nourished at all times.

Dr Mehta informed us about the application of the product and that the best way is to apply 2-3 drops of the oil for maximum absorption after washing your face twice a day. Leave it for a few minutes until it gets totally absorbed. Regular use of the oil will lead to plump and younger-looking skin and improve overall skin health.

Unlike other oils, hemp seed oil possesses a comedogenic rating of zero, meaning it won’t clog pores, giving the skin the space it needs to breathe.

With the winter season right around the corner, hemp seed oil is a must-have product. Highly nutritious and loaded with skin-friendly properties, it is the perfect addition to one’s daily skincare routine.

“Being a completely non-toxic ingredient, the oil has little to no complications on hair and skin and can be left overnight”, said Dr Vaibhav Mehta.

However, as with any new product, a patch test before the application is recommended.
