Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday congratulated Skyroot Aerospace for the successful launch of the Vikram-S rocket, India’s first privately developed launch vehicle. The prime minister called the launch a historic moment for India.

“It is an important milestone in the journey of India’s private space industry,” PM Modi said in a tweet adding that the accomplishment bears “testimony to the immense talent of our youth, who took full advantage of the landmark space sector reforms of June 2020.”

Telangana-based tech start-up Skyroot Aerospace on Friday launched the country’s first privately made rocket into space with three customer payloads. The launch marked an entry of the private sector into the Indian space program, which has so far remained solely under the government and the Indian Space Research organisation.

President Droupadi Murmu also congratulated Isro and SKyroot on the maiden private mission from the country. “Vikram-S, India’s first privately made rocket was successfully launched today by ISRO. It demonstrates India’s scientific prowess and the capabilities of our private space industry,” the president said.

The Vikram-S rocket launched from the sounding rocket complex of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO)’s Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota. The rocket was launched with three customer payloads into space touching an altitude of over 90 kilometers.

While Prarambh was a demonstration mission, it was still a full-scale suborbital launch for the company, which aims to strengthen the private space sector in the company. The mission validated the technology, engine, and designs of the Vikram rocket and demonstrated that it is capable of launching heavy payloads into Low Earth Orbit.
