The husband and in-laws of 21-year-old Mofiya Parveen from Kerala, who died by suicide on Monday night, were arrested on Wednesday, November 24, on charges of cruelty and harassment for dowry. Mofiya left behind a suicide note, naming her husband Muhammed Suhail and his parents, Yusuf and Rukia.

Meanwhile, Mofiya’s mother joined United Democratic Front (UDF) leaders staging a protest outside Aluva police station for stricter action against former Aluva Circle Inspector Sudheer, who was also held responsible for Mofiya’s death in the suicide note.

The Aluva East police arrested Suhail, Yusuf and Rukia from Kothamangalam, where they were hiding at a relative’s house. They had fled after the news of Mofiya’s death spread on Tuesday. They have been booked under IPC Sections 304 B (dowry death), 498 A (cruelty to woman) and 306 (abetment to suicide).

The 21-year-old committed suicide after levelling serious allegations of dowry-related torture by Suhail’s family and abetment by Sudheer.

“He [Suhail] was not right. I can’t live here. I loved him more than anything but now he is making up stories about me which I can’t stand. Action should be taken against CI. He should get maximum punishment. Suhail and his parents are criminals. They deserve maximum punishment. This is my last wish. I was able to give him a slap. If I was not able to do at least that, it would be a grave wrong. I commit to my own conscience,” Mofiya wrote in her suicide note.
