Reconciliation of deaths due to Covid-19 in Maharashtra continued for the 28th day with the state recording 2,288 ‘old’ deaths on Sunday.

Maharashtra on Sunday recorded 2,771 Covid deaths, including 2,288 ‘old’ deaths, as the reconciliation of deaths by the state government continued for the 28th day.

According to government figures, 284 deaths were recorded in the past 48 hours in the state, 199 last week and 2,288 before this period, which took the single-day tally to 2,771, the highest so far since the start of the exercise. Coronavirus Updates on June 14

In this ongoing data reconciliation exercise in Maharashtra, Mumbai reported 62 ‘old’ deaths on Sunday. These included 467 fatalities in Nashik, 351 in Nagpur, 324 in Pune, 249 in Ahmednagar and 148 in Satara.

In the past 28 days, 11,894 deaths were added compared to the reconciled figure, pushing the state’s cumulative Covid-19 toll to 1,11,104 and case fatality ratio to 2 per cent.

Between May 17 and Sunday, Maharashtra reconciled 17,724 unreported deaths. In the past four days, 2,288, 1,606, 2,213 and 1,522 fatalities were added on a daily basis.

Maharashtra on Sunday reported 10,442 cases of coronavirus diseases, taking the state-wide tally of cases to 59,08,992. Maharashtra also reported 483 Covid-related deaths in the past 24 hours, taking the death toll to 1,11,104.

The total number of recoveries reached 56,39,271, after 7,504 people recovered from the infection. Mumbai reported 695 Covid cases, which took the total to 7,15,660. The death toll reached 15,183 after 19 fatalities were reported.

Maharashtra has also been reconciling fatality data since May 21.

Earlier, the revision of Bihar’s Covid-19 death toll by 3,951 triggered a political slugfest last week, with opposition RJD accusing the Nitish Kumar government of “botching up” the fight against the pandemic and ruling members defending it as an administrative matter that has been corrected.

The Union Health Ministry on Friday wrote to the Bihar government to provide a detailed date and district-wise break-up of the reconciled number of Covid-19 deaths.

“States and UTs have been advised repeatedly through formal communications, multiple video conferences, and through the deployment of Central teams for the recording of deaths in accordance with laid down guidelines,” the press note read.

India sees 70,421 new Covid cases in 24 hours

India’s active caseload dropped below the 10-lakh mark on Monday and now stands at 9,73,158 cases with a decline of 53,001 cases in the last 24 hours, according to health ministry data.

India registered 70,421 new Covid-19 cases and 3,921 deaths in the last 24 hours ending 8 am on Monday. This is the lowest daily case count in India since March 31.

The top five states which have registered maximum cases are Tamil Nadu with 14,016 cases, followed by Kerala with 11,584 cases, Maharashtra with 10,442 cases, Karnataka with 7,810 cases and Andhra Pradesh with 6,770 cases. 71.88 per cent of the new cases are reported from these five states, with Tamil Nadu alone responsible for 19.9 per cent of the new cases.

Maximum deaths were reported in Maharashtra (2,771), followed by Tamil Nadu with 267 daily deaths. The total death toll in the country now stands at 3,74,305.
