A passenger had to be detained, and subsequently taken to a hospital, on Friday night after he jumped out of a moving plane at the Los Angeles International Airport, authorities said.

United Express flight 5365 to Salt Lake City, operated by SkyWest, was pulling away from a gate shortly after 7 p.m. when the passenger attempted to exit the flight.

He had initially tried to breach the cockpit, but then managed to open the service door and jumped down the emergency slide onto the tarmac, reported news agency Associated Press.

He was taken into custody by the airport authorities immediately on the taxiway. He was treated for injuries which were not life-threatening before being shifted to a hospital.

The Salt Lake City-bound twin-engine Embraer 175 returned to its gate, the airport said. The flight could not take off even after three hours. Nobody else aboard the plane was injured, said the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

Reportedly, the FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation) was given the responsibility to investigate the matter. It was the second such disruption to flight services at the Los Angeles International Airport in two days.

On Thursday, a driver went onto the airfield after breaking through the chain-link fence at a FedEx cargo facility. He was crossing runways before police chased his car and detained him. Police said the driver didn’t suffer any injury. Two runways were briefly closed.

Earlier this month, the FAA had informed that over 3,000 potential breakouts by unruly passengers have been registered this year so far, the highest since records began in 1995.

Most of the breaches reported were related to passengers refusing to comply with the federal facemask provision inside the flight.
