  • Scindia was travelling from New Delhi to Gwalior on Sunday
  • The police escort mistook someone else’s car for the one ferrying the BJP leader
  • Nine cops from Morena and five from Gwalior have been suspended over the security lapse

A security lapse involving BJP MP Jyotiraditya Scindia has led to the suspension of 14 police officers in Madhya Pradesh. The incident in question took place on Sunday when the Rajya Sabha MP was returning to Gwalior from New Delhi.

According to reports, a pilot police vehicle was supposed to escort Jyotiraditya Scindia‘s convoy all the way from the Morena border to the Gwalior border.

However, the police escort mistook another vehicle for the one ferrying Jyotiraditya Scindia to Gwalior. The police escort followed the other car for nearly 10 kilometres before realising that the car was not part of Scindia’s convoy.

As a result, Scindia’s convoy was without a police escort for a stretch of about eight kilometers.

The BJP leader’s convoy was eventually escorted to Jai Vilas Palace in Gwalior by personnel attached to the Hazira police station.

Once higher officials were apprised of the lapse in security, orders were issued for the suspension of 14 officials. The Morena Superintendent of Police (SP) suspended nine officials, while Gwalior SP Amit Sanghi placed another five officials under suspension for this lapse.

Jyotiraditya Scindia was given ‘Z’ security in February, 2019. The ‘Z’ category involves 22 personnel, including 8 armed guards at the protectee’s residence, two personal security officers (PSOs) round the clock and an armed escort of one-three vehicles for all journeys undertaken by road.

Protection under the ‘Z+’, ‘Z’, ‘Y+’ and ‘Y’ categories is accorded by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on the basis of threat assessment. The cost of this security is borne by the Government of India.
