Madhya Pradesh CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan paid his last respects to Group Captain Varun Singh at Bairagarh crematorium in Bhopal on Friday. The last rites of the officer will take place soon.
Group Captain Varun Singh, who was the lone survivor of the Indian Air Force (IAF) helicopter crash, had succumbed to his injuries at the Air Force Command Hospital in Bengaluru on Wednesday.
Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat, his wife and 11 others were also killed when the Mi-17 helicopter they were flying on crashed in Tamil Nadu’s Coonoor last week. A total of 14 people were on board when the chopper crashed in the bushes.
The mortal remains of Group Captain Varun Singh were flown to Bhopal by a service aircraft on Thursday. It arrived in a special plane at the city airport around 3 pm.
After the guard of honour, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, military and other officials paid floral tributes to the decorated air warrior, news agency PTI quoted official sources as saying. He also met the Group Captain’s grieving family members and consoled them.
The mortal remains later reached the Inner Court Apartment, where the group captain’s family resides in Suncity locality near the airport. Family members performed rituals before the coffin was taken inside the apartment.
The last rites will now be performed at the Bairagarh cremation ground on Friday.
