National sports day August 29(Today)

August 29 is celebrated as National Sports Day in India every year, marking the birth anniversary of Indian Olympic Gold medalist hockey player, Major Dhyan Chand Singh.

Popularly known as the ‘The Wizard’ or ‘The Magician’ of hockey for his superb ball control, Chand scored over 400 goals in his career, from 1926 to 1948. While cricket is synonymous with us Indians, the country has had several great sportsmen in every sport.
