PChidambaram hit out at the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for making key decisions without prior Cabinet approval. The Congress leader was referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s announcement on Friday, wherein he declared that the Centre will repeal all the three farm laws with the due procedure in Parliament.

In a tweet on Saturday, P Chidambaram targeted PM Modi, saying that he made the big announcement without discussing it in a cabinet meeting.

“Did you notice that the PM [Modi] made the announcement without holding a Cabinet meeting? It is only under the BJP that laws are made and unmade without prior Cabinet approval,” P Chidambaram said.

He also launched an attack on Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and BJP national president JP Nadda over their tweets following PM Modi’s speech on Friday morning.

“Home Minister [Amit Shah] hailed the PM’s announcement as showing ‘remarkable statesmanship’. BJP President said that PM has ‘immense care for farmers’. Defence Minister said that PM had taken the decision considering the ‘welfare of the farmers’. Where were these worthy leaders and their wise advice in the last 15 months?” P Chidambaram said.

On Friday, PM Modi announced that the Centre has decided to repeal the three contentious farm laws. He also apologised to the people over his government not being able to “convince” a section of farmers about the “truth” regarding the benefits of the three laws.

In his address to the nation, PM Modi also urged farmers to return home to their fields and families and make a new beginning on this auspicious occasion, a day when gurudwaras across the country are lit up to celebrate the festival.

Thousands of farmers have been camping near Delhi borders for over a year in protest against the three farm laws. Several rounds of talks were held between protesting farmers and the central government over the laws, however, no breakthrough was achieved.

However, PM Modi said the Centre will now withdraw the three laws and the procedure to repeal the laws will start during the upcoming Parliament session.

Calling the Centre’s decision to repeal the farm laws as a “great victory for the farmers and the Congress”, P Chidambaram took a dig at the government on Friday, saying the move was not inspired by a change of heart but impelled by “fear of elections”.
