The Kapil Dev-led 1983 World Cup-winning squad was reduced to tears while sharing anecdotes from the title-winning campaign with India Today consulting editor Rajdeep Sardesai on a special show.

The India Today show Stars of 83! is a special programme on the real-to-reel journey of India’s greatest cricket victory reloaded featuring the members of India’s WC-winning squad like Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev, Sandeep Patil and the movie stars who portrayed them in the biopic.

The film follows how the Indian cricket team, a team that no one believed in’, went from being the underdogs to winning their first-ever World Cup in 1983 by beating the reigning champions, West Indies.

Speaking to India Today Consulting Editor Rajdeep Sardesai, World Cup-winning opener Kris Srikkanth highlighted how Kapil Dev’s mad drive to win the World Cup motivated the team in England. India were written off before the tournament but they rallied against the odds to stun Clive Lloyd’s West Indies in an epic final.

Ranveer Singh portrays Kapil Dev, captain of the 1983 cricket World Cup-winning team, in the sports biopic 83. Talking about his role, Ranveer said that bowling like Kapil was the most difficult aspect of his character development. Hardy Sandhu as Madan Lal, Ammy Virk as Balvinder Singh Sandhu, Saqib Saleem as Mohinder Amarnath and others also feature in the nearly four-minute video.

It is safe to say the image of Kapil Dev lifting the World Cup trophy on the Lord’s balcony changed the dynamics of world cricket. It inspired a million, including the greatest batsman to have ever graced planet Earth.

India’s route to the final saw them comfortably make it through Group B with four wins from six, before seeing off hosts England at Old Trafford in the semi-final. They came up against the Windies in the final who were in the hunt for a hat-trick of World Cup titles, but were to be shocked by a determined Indian bowling line-up.
