iPhone’s Foxconn plant in China witnessed a mass exit of close to 20,000 employees after a series of protests. As per reports, over 20,000 employees including the new hires have left the manufacturer a day after violent protests broke out at Foxconn’s Zhengzhou plant in China. Workers had expressed unhappiness over the working conditions, which later escalated into protests in the past couple of days.

Foxconn, in an attempt to quell protests, had offered to pay newly hired workers 10,000 yuan ($1400) to quit the facility. In a message to employees, which was accessed by CNN, the company urged workers to return to their dormitories. The company also promised to pay 8000 yuan if they agreed to quit Foxconn and another 2000 yuan once they board the bus to leave the facility.

Now a Reuters report has claimed that the employees have left the facility. Most of the employees leaving the manufacturer were new hires and had not started working on the production line. The mass exodus of employees can largely impact iPhone production. Previously, the lockdown due to a surge in COVID cases had impacted iPhone production.

Foxconn apologised for the pay related issues that had given rise to the protests. “Our team has been looking into the matter and discovered a technical error occurred during the onboarding process,” Foxconn said in an official statement.

“We apologize for an input error in the computer system and guarantee that the actual pay is the same as agreed and the official recruitment posters,” the Apple supplier added.

Apple had previously confirmed facing massive delays in iPhone 14 model shipment. The company said that the “COVID-19 restrictions have temporarily impacted the primary iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max assembly facility located in Zhengzhou, China.” “The facility is currently operating at significantly reduced capacity. As we have done throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, we are prioritizing the health and safety of the workers in our supply chain.”

Further elaborating on the iPhone 14 shipments, Apple said in an official statement, “We continue to see strong demand for iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max models. However, we now expect lower iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max shipments than we previously anticipated and customers will experience longer wait times to receive their new products,”
