The prices of petrol and diesel have maintained stability across the country as the state-run oil marketing companies (OMCs) have not revised the fuel rates on Tuesday, December 7, 2021. Notably, oil companies have kept the prices of petrol and diesel stable for over a month now.

However, last week, the Delhi government announced a reduction in value-added tax (VAT) on petrol from 30 per cent to 19.40 per cent, making petrol cheaper by Rs 8.56 per litre in the national capital.

A litre of petrol now costs Rs 95.41 per litre in Delhi, while diesel rates, which were kept unchanged, stand at Rs 86.67 per litre.

On the other hand, there has been no change in the prices of petrol and diesel in other key cities. In India’s financial hub, Mumbai, petrol is retailing at Rs 109.98 per litre and people have to shell out Rs 94.14 for one litre of diesel, which is still the highest among four metro cities.

Similarly, the prices of petrol and diesel remained unaltered in Chennai and stood at Rs 101.40 and Rs 91.43 per litre, respectively.

Meanwhile, petrol can be bought at Rs 104.67 per litre in Kolkata and diesel costs Rs 101.56 per litre.

Fuel rates in other Indian cities

In India, state-run oil refiners such as Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum, and Hindustan Petroleum revise fuel rates on a daily basis, by taking into account the crude oil prices on the international markets and also the rupee-dollar exchange rates.

Moreover, the prices of petrol and diesel vary from state to state and also in cities, depending on the local taxes like value-added tax (VAT) and freight charges.

It may be noted that Rajasthan levies the highest VAT in the country, followed by Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh.

In Rajasthan’s Sri Ganganagar, petrol is retailing at Rs 111.64 per litre and diesel costs Rs 94.83 per litre.

Meanwhile, in Port Blair, petrol and diesel cost Rs 82.96 per litre and Rs 77.13 per litre respectively, which is the cheapest in the country.
