Petrol and diesel prices were left unchanged on Saturday, November 6. To consumers’ relief, fuel rates remained steady across the country after taxes levied on fuel were slashed by the Centre and some states on Diwali.

The stability in fuel prices comes as a respite for consumers after a series of steep daily hikes that led to a sharp jump in petrol and diesel prices across the country.

Notably, a reduction in excise duty of Rs 5 per litre for petrol and Rs 10 per litre for diesel was announced by the Centre on Diwali which followed a reduction in VAT in several states and ultimately led to a sharp drop in petrol and diesel rates.

Following the cut, petrol is now retailing at Rs. 103.97 per litre in Delhi and Rs 109.98 per litre in Mumbai. Meanwhile, fuel rates have been reduced to Rs. 104.67 per litre in Kolkata and Rs 101.40 per litre in Chennai.

Similarly, diesel prices have also fallen sharply after the tax cuts announced by the Centre and states. Diesel has become cheaper in Delhi and is retailing at Rs. 86.67 per litre.

In India’s financial capital, Mumbai, diesel costs Rs. 94.14 per litre whereas it can be bought for Rs 89.79 per litre in Kolkata.

Which states reduced VAT?

Following the Centre’s move to slash excise duty levied on fuel, several states, including Karnataka, Puducherry, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Assam, Sikkim, Bihar, Goa, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh have also announced tax cuts on fuel. Meanwhile, three Union Territories, including Puducherry, Jammu and Kashmir and Chandigarh have also slashed VAT.

Notably, Chandigarh has slashed value-added tax (VAT) levied on petrol and diesel by Rs 7 per litre.

In some cities too, including Bengaluru (Rs 100.58/litre), Lucknow (Rs 95.28/litre), Gurugram (Rs 95.90/litre), Noida (Rs 95.36/litre), petrol rates have fallen sharply after VAT reduction.
