RAshwin moved past Harbhajan Singh to become India’s third highest wicket taker with his five-wicket haul against New Zealand on Day 5 of the first Test in Kanpur on Monday. It took Ashwin’s career tally to 418 wickets while Harbhajan has 417 wickets to his name in the longest format of the game.

Ashwin moved level with Harbhajan when he took the wicket of New Zealand opener Will Young towards the end of the fourth day. He then dismissed Tom Latham to get his 418th Test wicket. The 35-year-old had earlier registered figures of 3/82 in the 42.3 overs that he bowled in the New Zealand first innings.

Ashwin is the fourth Indian bowler to take more than 400 wickets in Test cricket. He also became the 13th highest Test wicket-taker of all time. He jumped past Pakistan fast bowling great Wasim Akram (414) as well apart from Harbhajan on the list.

Among active Test cricketers, Ashwin is the third highest wicket taker after England fast bowling duo Stuart Broad (524) and James Anderson (632).

Ashwin made his Test debut in November 2011 against the West Indies in Delhi. His 418 wickets have come in 80 Tests at a strike rate of 52.4 and average of 24.56. Apart from his prowess with the ball, Ashwin is also known for his capability with the bat, scoring 2685 runs at an average of 27.68 with five centuries to his name.

Ashwin has also taken 150 wickets in 111 ODIs and is the third highest wicket taker for India in T20Is with 61 scalps in 51 matches.
