Bollywood is back to business and by that we mean,movies are all set to hit the screens and get the cash registers ringing.  The single screens incurred huge amount of losses in the last one year with theatres remaining shut due to COVID-19 pandemic. Adding up to their plight, many production houses too turned up to OTT platforms to release their films given the uncertainity of the situation due to the COVID surge across the country.

However, with things finally coming under control and with the second wave of COVID subsiding by the day, theatres are gradually starting to reopen in phases. Mumbai, the Bollywood hub, has partially reopened after 2 months of lockdown. So it’s only obvious that movies, which were waiting to release in theatres, are quickly blocking dates to make use of this window before there’s yet another lockdown. 

From Akshay Kumar’s Bell Bottom to John Abraham’s Attack to SS Rajamouli’s magnum opus RRR, let’s take a look at all the big Bollywood films releasing in theatres in 2021.

Bell Bottom – July 27, 2021

On Tuesday, Akshay Kumar announced that his spy thriller, ‘Bell Bottom’, will have a big-screen release on July 27. He tweeted, “I know you have patiently waited for #Bellbottom! Couldn’t be happier to finally announce the release of our film. Arriving across big screens worldwide #BellBottomOn27July Airplane” Bell Bottom also stars Vaani Kapoor in lead role and is based on the plane hijacks that took India by a storm in the early 1980s.

Attack – August 13, 2021

John Abraham starrer Attack is aiming for August 13 release. Based on a true story of a hostage crisis, the film also features Jacqueline Fernandez and Rakul Preet Singh. John will be seen as the lone ranger who will lead an attack team during a counter operation. An insider, in interaction with Mid Day, was quoted saying, “While John’s Eid release ‘Satyameva Jayate 2’ had to be deferred, ‘Attack’ will meet its August 13 release.”

Sooryavanshi in October and 83 in November

Sooryavanshi and 83 are two of the much-awaited films waiting for a theatrical release. Both were ready for release around March last year. However, that’s exactly when the pandemic hit our lives and the movies got pushed indefinitely. Sooryavanshi, directed by Rohit Shetty, stars Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif in lead roles whereas 83 starring Ranveer Singh is based on India’s 1983 world cup win. A trade source revealed to Mid Day, “The exhibitors want to give ‘Sooryavanshi’ and ’83’ their due for standing by them through 2020. It is possible that the cop caper will arrive in October, followed by Ranveer Singh’s cricket drama in November.

RRR – October 13, 2021

SS Rajamouli’s RRR aka Roudram Ranam Rudhiram is aiming for October 13, 2021 release. This again is one film that has kept everyone waiting since over a year now. The period drama is going to have a Pan-India release in multiple languages including Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada. Starring Ram Charan, Jr NTR, Alia Bhatt, Ajay Devgn, RRR revolves around two brothers who set out to bring a revolution.

The above mentioned films are guaranteed believed to be releasing in theatres this year. Several other films are in the pipeline including Alia-Ranbir’s Brahmastra, Yash’s KGF Chapter 2, Akshay’s Atrangi Re, Shershaah, Shahid Kapoor’s Jersey, Saif Ali Khan’s Bhoot Police. However, the release dates will be announced depending on the pandemic situation.
