Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) chairman Mukesh Ambani on Tuesday shared future plans related to a leadership transition at the energy-to-telecom conglomerate. The statement is significant as Mukesh Ambani hinted at an “accelerated leadership transition” in RIL.

Mukesh Ambani, 64, said he wants the transition process at Reliance to be accelerated by seniors, including him, to make way for the younger generation. This is the first time Asia’s richest man and chairman of one of India’s biggest conglomerates has spoken openly about succession plans.

He was speaking at the Reliance Family Day, which marks the birth anniversary of the group’s founder, Dhirubhai Ambani. “Reliance is now in the process of effecting a momentous leadership transition,” Mukesh Ambani said. It may be noted that Mukesh Ambani has three children – twins, Akash Ambani and Isha Ambani, and the youngest son, Anant Ambani.

Mukesh Ambani went on to say that RIL will become one of the strongest and most reputed Indian multinational companies in the world in coming years, propelled by forays into the clean and green energy sector as well as retail and telecom businesses reaching unprecedented heights.

“Achieving big dreams and impossible-looking goals is all about getting the right people and the right leadership,” he added.

He said that Reliance is now in the process of effecting a momentous leadership transitionfrom seniors belonging to my generation to the next generation of young leaders. Mukesh Ambani added that he would like the process of leadership transition to be accelerated.

“All seniors – myself included – should now yield to the highly competent, extremely committed, and incredibly promising young leadership talent at Reliance,” Mukesh Ambani said.

“We should guide them, enable them, encourage them and empower them… and sit back and applaud as they perform better than us,” he added without elaborating any further.

As of now, Reliance has three verticals, including the traditional energy business, the retail segment, and the telecom and digital business under Jio.

Mukesh Ambani also said that an organisational culture must be built at Reliance that outlasts its leaders. “I have no doubt that Akash, Isha and Anant as the next-gen leaders will lead Reliance to even greater heights.”

He added that he saw in them “the same spark and potential” that the legendary industrialist and his father had “for making a difference to millions of lives and contributing to India’s growth”.

“Let us all wish them good luck in their mission to make Reliance ever more successful with even more transformative initiatives and achieving even greater accolades for our Reliance,” he said.
