Legendary Pakistan fast bowler Wasim Akram said it’s unfair to compare Babar Azam to Virat Kohli, adding that Pakistan captain is slowly but surely getting to the level where the India skipper is at the moment.

Wasim Akram, speaking at Salaam Cricket 2021, played down the concerns around Virat Kohli’s batting form, saying the India star has proved his merit over the years.

Akram’s comments came in the lead up to the much-anticipated T20 World Cup match between India and Pakistan in Dubai on Sunday, October 24. Notably, it will be the first time Babar and Kohli will meet as captains in a World Cup fixture.

Babar Azam, who took over as captain in all three formats only last year, faces the biggest test of his nascent captaincy career as he leads Pakistan in the T20 World Cup amid great expectations.

Akram said that Babar Azam has taken up captaincy only recently but insisted that the young Pakistan star is a quick learner and he will only get better with time as the leader of the Pakistan cricket team.

Virat Kohli is Virat Kohli: Wasim Akram

“Virat Kohli is Virat Kohli. He has dominated world cricket, scored all those runs over these years. He has led India. Babar Azam has started captaining Pakistan only now. But as far his technique is concerned, is very good to watch and very consistent in all formats,” Akram said.

“He is learning his captaincy, he is a quick learner. So, it’s unfair to compare those two now. But Babar is definitely heading towards the position where Virat Kohli is now.”

Like Virat Kohli, Babar Azam is also among the top 10 across all three formats in the ICC rankings. The Pakistan captain has been a consistent run-getter for his side over the years

Babar averages over 50 in ODIs having scored 3985 runs in 83 matches while his average in Tests and T20Is is just below the 50-mark. The 27-year-old has already hit 20 international hundreds.

Babar is heading into the World Cup on the back of a consistent run. He has scored 6 50-plus scores in his 10 competitive outings, including a hundred for Central Punjab in the National T20 league. Babar hit a match-winning 50 against West Indies in their warm-up match against West Indies earlier this week
