To avoid any inconvenience and continue enjoying seamless banking services, the State Bank of India (SBI) has urged its customers to link their permanent account number (PAN) with an Aadhaar number. SBI, India’s largest commercial lender, also gave a stern warning to its accountholders that if the two documents are not linked, then the PAN will be rendered inoperative/inactive and cannot be quoted for specified transactions.

Taking to its official Twitter handle, the lender tweeted, “We advise our customers to link their PAN with Aadhaar to avoid any inconvenience and continue enjoying a seamless banking service.” (sic)

For the unversed, any person who has a PAN card is eligible to get Aadhaar and if they already have an Aadhaar, then they must communicate the same to the Income Tax (IT) Department.

Why is linking of PAN and Aadhaar mandatory?

In September, the Central government extended the deadline for linking PAN and Aadhaar till March 31, 2022 on account of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Accountholders need a PAN card for a host of transactions such as opening of bank accounts, Demat accounts, cash deposits in bank accounts, dealing in securities and transactions related to immovable property. Since Aadhaar is biometric-based and cannot be obtained based on any other identification document, the linking of both the documents is important for tax administration.

It is also important to link the two as it permits the government to keep a tab of taxable financial transactions and helps in prevention of tax evasion.
