The Block Education Officer in Karnataka’s Bagalkot district ordered the closure of St Paul’s School in Ilkal town after students were served meat during Christmas Day celebrations.

In a letter to the school authorities, the Block Education Officer wrote, “It is brought to our notice that you’ve served meat during celebrations and it has caused embarrassment to the department and public. Hence, school can’t be opened till further orders.”

The order was later revoked when it was brought to the notice of the education department.

The local officer had reportedly ordered the school’s closure without informing the District Commissioner or the department of education.

“We can’t shut down a school because it serves non-vegetarian food. The order is being revoked now,” the education department said on Friday.

Earlier, right-wing groups had staged protests and alleged that the school was converting children to Christianity and brainwashing them to believe in the Bible.
