Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Tuesday, November 9, said that crores of Rupees had been sought by the previous AIADMK government from the Centre in the name of the Smart City project, but they hadn’t been utilized properly.

“I don’t know what happened to the funds. After all this [floods] is over, we shall form an inquiry committee,” Stalin said. “I’m wondering what Velumani [former AIADMK minister] did. They’ve taken a lot of commission,” he alleged.

“Action would be taken against the contractors,” he said.

In the wake of the heavy rain, several districts in Tamil Nadu have seen waterlogging in various places. Schools and colleges have been shut in 14 districts of the state, following heavy rainfall and floods. The death toll also rose to five on Tuesday.

“As many as 538 huts and four houses have been damaged. More damage is expected if rain intensifies,” said Tamil Nadu Revenue and Disaster Management Minister KKSSR Ramachandran.

The Madras High Court on Tuesday came down hard on Chennai Municipal Corporation for its failure to take adequate measures to prevent inundation in the city during rain. The court asked what the authorities had been doing since the 2015 floods.
