A transwoman teacher was allegedly expelled from a school in Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur Kheri because of her identity. The National Commission for Women has taken cognizance of the matter and the chairperson, Rekha Sharma wrote to the state’s chief secretary seeking an independent inquiry into the matter.

She also asked the authorities to take strict action against the school authorities if the allegations levelled turn out to be true. Sharma asked that the action taken in the matter be apprised to the Commission within seven days.

A copy of the letter was also sent to the District Magistrate, Lakhimpur Kheri.

On the other hand, the school administration has refuted the allegations that the teacher was expelled because of her identity and cited incompetency as the reason for her termination.

The Transgender Persons (Protection of Right) Act, 2019 was enacted to end the discrimination against transgender persons and provide them with equal opportunities in all spheres of life.
