As cyclone Sitrang crossed Bangladesh, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted heavy rainfall for north-eastern states of India. The cyclone has uprooted trees and damaged houses in north-eastern states. The cyclone crossed the Bangladesh coast near Barisal between 9:30 pm and 11:30 pm on Monday after skirting the West Bengal coast, the meteorological department stated.

As many as 11 people were killed by the impact of Cyclone Sitrang in Bangladesh’s Bhola and Narail districts.

• Torrential rainfall, continuing since Monday in Assam, has triggered severe waterlogging in several parts of Guwahati.Santu Das from Civil Defence said that the authorities have alerted tourists and locals not to venture near the sea in West Bengal. Tides hit the coast of Bakkhali beach in South 24 Parganas, amid cyclone ‘Sitrang’ alert.
• The IMD have issued an alert regarding Cyclone ‘Sitrang’. There is a high chance of rain on October 25. There is an appeal to the people to avoid going out unnecessarily or to the sea areas, including the Sundarbans. Arrangements have been made by the state govt: WB CM Mamata Banerjee.
• The IMD has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall for today in four northeastern states, including Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya and Nagaland.

• As per IMD, “Strong wind speed reaching 25-35 kmph gusting to 45 kmph is very likely to prevail over south Assam and adjoining Meghalaya, Mizoram and Tripura during the next 6 hours and reduce thereafter.”
• An orange alert indicating heavy rain was issued for West Bengal as cyclone Sitrang intensifies over the Bay of Bengal. Fishermen were advised not to venture into the Central Bay of Bengal. Rescue teams have been deployed to evacuated people from areas to be most affected by the cyclone.
• The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on October 23 (Sunday) had warned that a deep depression over the central Bay of Bengal had intensified into a cyclonic storm Sitrang.
