In view of the prevailing law and order situation in the city, the Tripura Police has denied TMC’s Abhishek Banerjee permission to hold a rally in the state capital of Agartala. However, TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee will still be visiting Agartala on Monday.

The police has said that neither the BJP nor the TMC will be allowed to hold rallies or roadshows in Agartala on Monday in view of the ‘escalating tension’ in the city.

“Permission for street corner meets granted to both,” sub divisional police officer Ramesh Yadav was quoted by ANI news agency. TMC has been allowed to hold their street corner meet between 12 and 2.30 pm on Monday.

WHAT HAPPENED IN AGARTALA?

Trinamool Youth Congress President Saayoni Ghosh was arrested by the Tripura Police on attempt to murder charges on Sunday. It was alleged that she tried to run over some BJP workers with her vehicle on Saturday evening.

Saayoni Ghosh will be produced in court on Monday. TMC is expected to move for bail soon after.

Earlier on Sunday, the TMC alleged that their party workers were beaten with sticks and stones inside the police station in Agartala by BJP members. The TMC members had gathered at the police station after Saayoni Ghosh was taken there for questioning in the morning.

Several people were also injured in an attack on the TMC state unit’s Steering Committee chief Subal Bhowmik’s residence in Bhagaban Thakur Chowmuni area of Agartala on Sunday night. Police and Tripura State Rifles personnel were deployed in the area.

Now, a delegation of more than fifteen TMC MPs have sought an appointment with the Union home minister Amit Shah in Delhi over police brutality faced by TMC workers at the hands of Tripura Police, party officials said. The MPs will sit on a dharna in the national capital on Monday.

TMC leader Derek O’Brien tweeted on Monday morning, “Home Minister, Sir. Brutal attacks on TMC. Even members of media clobbered in Tripura. Unprecedented attacks. Arrests on trumped-up charges. 16 Trinamool MPs have reached Delhi. Sir, please do give us an appointment this morning. Patiently waiting.”
