Foreign medical graduates, especially the ones who studied at Chinese institutions, have moved the Supreme Court seeking an urgent hearing on their plea on internships as they are unable to register for India’s licence exam or provisional admission.

The lawyer representing the students told the bench of Chief Justice of India (CJI), UU Lalit, that due to the Covid-19 pandemic the students were not able to complete their internships and now they are not being allowed to register for provisional admission, and the Foreign Medical Graduates Examination (FMGE).

The CJI has listed the matter for October 10.

In March, taking cognisance of the unforeseen situations worldwide, the National Medical Commission (NMC) had allowed Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs) with incomplete internships because of ‘compelling situations’ such as war and Covid-19 to apply for internships in India if they are able to clear the FMGE. The National Medical Commission has also released some guidelines for the registration of Foreign Medical Graduates.

“In addition to the above, it has further been observed that there are also some Foreign Medical Graduates with incomplete internship due to such compelling situation which is beyond their control, such as Pandemic Covid-19 and war etc,” read an official notification by the FMG.
