On Sunday a wild sloth bear killed a couple and injured eight persons in Sompeta and Mandasa mandals of Srikakulam district . There was much tension among the residents as the bear reportedly came from the nearby forest areas of Odisha-Chattisgarh . The aged couple succumbed to severe injuries in the Sompet government hospitals. Lack of facilities and absence of doctors on Sunday also reportedly contributed to their death . The injured persons conditions seemed to be pathetic. The bear which moved swiftly in the villages killed many animals like cow and goats. Collector K. Dhananjaya Reddy and Joint Collector KVN Chakradharbabu directed District Forest Officer Ch. Santi Swaroop to submit a report. A team of forest officials visited the villages. District Medical and Health Officer S. Tirupati Rao rushed teams from Palasa, Itchapuram and surrounding areas to treat the injured. Palasa MLA Gowthu Shyam Sundar Shivaji announced compensation for the kin of the victims and the injured. Srikakulam District forest Officer Ch.Santi Swaroop on said that the government would pay Rs. 5 lakh as compensation for the kin of the persons who were killed in the attack. The injured will get up to Rs. 1 lakh as compensation.
