MADRAS HC SLAMS DHANUSH FOR SEEKING ENTRY TAX EXEMPTION FOR ROLLS-ROYCE

A few days ago, actor Vijay’s nine-year-old writ petition seeking entry tax exemption for his imported Rolls-Royce Ghost was heard at the Madras Court. The judge, who heard the case, came down heavily on Vijay for seeking tax exemption. The judge also asked Vijay to follow whatever he preaches on screen.

After the High Court made scathing remarks against Vijay, Dhanush’s plea came up for hearing on Thursday (August 5). Dhanush’s counsel informed that the actor had paid 50 per cent of the tax. They had also agreed to pay the rest and sought the withdrawal of the plea.

Justice SM Subramaniam refused to withdraw Dhanush’s petition, saying that the case has been pending since 2015. The judge pointed out that Dhanush and his counsel were seeking to withdraw the plea after the High Court listed the case for hearing. The judge also asked why the actor hadn’t mentioned his profession in his petition.

During the hearing, Justice SM Subramaniam said, “You are going to drive the car on the roads which is laid by the taxpayers’ money. Will the car fly in air if you buy from foreign? Every citizen who puts petrol for Rs 50 pays taxes. Buy a helicopter too. It is unacceptable not to pay taxes on it. Even daily wagers are buying soap, which is taxed. Are they filing a case?”

The judge iterated that it is Dhanush’s right to approach the court and he should have withdrawn the petition in 2018 after the Supreme Court settled the issue.

The court further asked the commercial tax department to inform them about the pending amount the actor should pay and ordered the actor to pay the amount before Monday (August 9. The case is further listed for order at 2. 15 pm today.

Dhanush had initially filed a writ petition in 2012 seeking entry tax exemption. The commercial tax department imposed a tax of Rs 60.66 lakh as a pre-condition to issuing the NOC. In 2015, Dhanush was asked to pay 50 per cent of the tax amount.
