Spain won gold in the new mixed team trap event at the Tokyo Olympics while San Marino won their first ever silver in Games history. This is the second medal of these Games for San Marino, who had never won an Olympic medal before Tokyo 2020, after Alessandra Perilli won bronze in the women’s trap on Thursday.

Spaniards Fatima Galvez and Alberto Fernandez shot 41 of the 50 targets in the gold medal match, one more than Perilli and Gian Marco Berti managed for San Marino.

United States’ Madelynn Bernau and Brian Burrows won the bronze in a shoot-off victory over Slovakian women’s trap champion Zuzana Rehak Stefecekova and Erik Varga after both pairs had shot 42.

A second U.S. team, which included women’s trap silver medallist Kayle Browning, failed to reach the medal rounds while Australian world champions Laetisha Scanlan and James Willett were also eliminated in the qualification round.

San Marino became the least populated country to win an Olympic medal at the Summer or Winter Games when Perilli clinched bronze earlier. Perilli was the first Olympic medallist for the microstate of around 34,000 inhabitants.
