In an unfortunate turn of events, legendary Indian athlete Milkha Singh passed away after battling COVID-19 for over a month. India’s Flying Sikh left for his heavenly abode last night and apart from the bereaved family, it was honourable PM Narendra Modi who confirmed the news to the nation via a tweet. Singh’s death comes days after the unfortunate demise of his wife Nirmal Saini. 

Many have mourned the passing away of the Indian track and field athlete aged 91, especially from the entertainment industry. King Khan took to his Twitter handle and called Singh an isnpiration to him and to million others. SRK wrote: “The Flying Sikh may no longer be with us in person but his presence will always be felt and his legacy will remain unmatched… An inspiration to me… an inspiration to millions. Rest in Peace Milkha Singh sir.”

Apart from Shah Rukh Khan, the likes of Anupam Kher, Priyanka Chopra, Riteish Sidhwani, Angad Bedi, Neha Dhupia and others from the industry penned heartfelt notes for the Late athlete. Take a look here: 

Javed Jafari paid his tribute to Singh with a song from his biopic film Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. He wrote: “#RIP #MilkhaSingh Ji. Grew up with him as the prime sports hero of the country. Condolences to the family This song is a befitting tribute in your remembrance”. 

Raveena Tandon shared a picture with Singh and said that he will always hold a special place in our hearts. In her tweet, she also mentioned that “Whenever we need to be inspired, “bhaag milkhe bhaag,” will resound in our ears”. See her post here: 

The news of Singh’s demise was confirmed by his family in a statement, a part of which reads: “It is with extreme sadness that we would like to inform you that Milkha Singh Ji passed away at 11.30 pm. on the 18th of June 2021. He fought hard but God has his ways and it was perhaps true love and companionship that both our mother Nirmal Ji and now Dad have passed away in a matter of 5 days.” 

For the unversed, Singh’s wife Nirmal also passed away due to COVID-19 complications. The couple is survived by two children Sonia Sanwalka and Jeev Milkha Singh who is a sought-after Indian Golfer.
