  • Harry Kane has to get ready and help the team: Spurs manager Nuno Espirito Santo

Tottenham manager Nuno Espirito Santo reserved praise for Oliver Skipp as his side opened the new Premier League season with victory over champions Manchester City.

Son Heung-min netted a second-half winner Sunday as Tottenham opened the Premier League season with an impressive 1-0 home victory over defending champion Manchester City — the team that has spent the summer trying to buy its talisman striker.

“It was good I think. The atmosphere was special from the hard work of the boys. They make any crowd proud when they work so hard,” Espirito Santo, who enjoyed a third Premier League win over City boss Pep Guardiola, said.

“It was strong. We were lucky because they had chances but the boys held on and they stayed in the game. We knew it would be tough. After that first 20 minutes we did better and we started getting our chances.

“I’m sure that with commitment and the talent we have, we will be a good team. We are in the process of that. I am learning every day and I am very proud of them today.”

Espirito Santo, who enjoyed an impressive stint at Wolverhampton Wanderers, finally became Tottenham’s new manager in July after a protracted search by the London club.

Spurs manager Nuno Espirito Santo told Harry Kane to get fit and be ready to help the team after registering a 1-0 win over defending champions Manchester City to open their Premier League season on Sunday.

Kane was absent from the Spurs squad with his future at the club still in doubt over interest from City.

“Harry is one of the best players in the world, we are very lucky to have him, so he has to get ready and help the team,” said Nuno.

“I’m sure with the commitment and the talent we have we will have a good team.
