Opposing the Tamil Nadu government’s stand on NEET 2021, BJP leader L Murugan said seeking cancellation of the exam was a “politically motivated” which would “cause more chaos”.

A day after Tamil Nadu Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi reiterated his government’s stand to cancel NEET 2021, citing the coronavirus pandemic situation, state BJP leader L Murugan termed it a “politically motivated stand” which, he claimed, would only cause more chaos.

L Murugan said since 2017, the students have started to get used to NEET with last year’s vertical reservation introduced by the former government. “DMK will always talk and write about social justice on the party mouthpiece, Murasoli, but won’t follow it.”

“NEET is a type of exam which had issues earlier but now people have started to become familiar with it,” Murugan said, adding that awareness and coaching classes should be conducted instead of causing more confusion [for the students], thereby “playing with the future of the students”.

Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin has sought cancellation of NEET 2021 citing the pandemic situation.

“Given the circumstances, I’m of the strong view that conducting National level entrance examinations for any professional course would be immensely detrimental to the health and well-being of the students. I, therefore, urge you to cancel the conduct of all national level entrance examinations like NEET,” Stalin said.

When asked about DMK’s allegation that NEET causes social injustice to students from rural areas, Murugan said it was the Supreme Court’s verdict that was being followed.ADVERTISEMENT

“DMK went to the Supreme Court while Congress leader Chidambaram’s wife only argued about implementation of the NEET. When they are in Opposition, their stand was different from now when they have become the ruling party,” Murugan said.

However, BJP’s strongest ally in Tamil Nadu, AIADMK is also opposing NEET but Murugan dismissed it, saying it was a “political stand”. Murugan also stated that DMK will not succeed in cancelling NEET.

“DMK will not succeed, that’s why they formed a committee. In Tamil Nadu, if you are unable to do something, you form a committee, it will be given several extension before being dissolved,” stated Murugan.
