Though Kerala did not have much to do for Onam, the State has turned its entire attention towards the rehabilitation and restoration of normal life devastated by the unprecedented floods in the central districts of the State. The relief work was reviewed by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. 4,62,456 persons are still housed in 1435 relief camps. Till date over three lakh houses have been cleaned. Apart from the physical challenge of clearing debris, cleaning flood ravaged buildings, sanitation and medical care, the fiscal challenges of handling the post-flood reconstruction are growing, despite a massive inflow of aid to the Chief Minister’s Distress Relief Fund. For those affected by the flood, the State has already announced compensation. The Public Works Department action plan presented to the government to restore roads and other damaged infrastructure, puts the cost at Rs. 5,815.25 crores over the next 18 months. The centre gave Rs.562.45 crore to the State Disaster Response Fund. After Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s assurance to Governor P.Sathasivam for further assistance the State Government has been preparing a memorandum. The major challenge is to clean the 700 odd schools that were submerged by the flood. The  educational institutions are scheduled to re-open on August 29th after an advanced Onam Vacation.  Vital Infrastructure is a major loss to most of these schools. For many schools in Alappuzha district, it is a herculean task.
