An Indian Army jawan was brutally thrashed by Jharkhand Police personnel in Chatra district on Wednesday for not wearing a face mask.

A video of the incident, which has gone viral on social media, shows the jawan being indiscriminately kicked, pummelled and beaten with sticks by police personnel.

The incident took place in the Karma Bazar area under the jurisdiction of Mayurhand police station in Chatra, where police were conducting a mask checking campaign. The jawan had arrived at the market on his bike and was pulled up and beaten up by policemen for not wearing a mask.

When onlookers tried to intervene, they were pushed aside by the policemen, some of whom can be seen without masks in the video.

Three police personnel and two other officials have been suspended after angry villagers took the injured jawan to the police station to lodge a complaint.

According to reports, the jawan was beaten up in the presence of BDO Saket Sinha. The incident of police brutality has sparked widespread outrage on social media.

Taking cognizance, Chatra SP Rakesh Ranjan has ordered an investigation into the matter, with the probe report to be submitted to DSP (Headquarters) Kedar Ram.

“Departmental action will be taken against the culprits as soon as the inquiry report is received,” SP Rakesh Ranjan told India Today.

Several ex-servicemen’s bodies and political parties have called for the dismissal and arrest of BDO Saket Sinha and the police personnel involved in the incident. The BJP and the AJSU have said they will take out demonstrations across all districts of Jharkhand if immediate action is not taken against those responsible.
