Reliance is gearing up for its 44th AGM that will take place on June 24. It is supposed to be a big event with plenty of announcements to make. One of those big announcements could be the arrival of Jio Phone 5G.

Over the past couple of months, we’ve heard reports about this affordable 5G smartphone. Some reports suggest that the device could be priced under Rs 5,000, whereas others point towards a price as low as Rs 2,500.

During a virtual conference with select reporters from the Asia Pacific recently, Sundar Pichai mentioned that Google is working closely with the telecom giant to bring the promised “affordable” smartphone in India.

Now that Reliance is gearing to unveil 5G services in India, it may also want to release its 5G phone alongside. With the launch of Jio Phone 5G on cards, we decided to detail everything known about this smartphone so far.

Jio 5G Phone specs and features

–Google, last year during Reliance AGM, announced an investment of $337 crore in Jio. The partnership also involves developing an affordable 5G device that might appear at the upcoming event. We also learned that Google would be developing a custom Android skin for this device during the same event.

–That said, we still don’t know if the device will be running Android Go or a completely new custom designed OS. What we know is that the OS will be optimised for entry-level hardware. As per some reports, this fresh skin could be called JioOS.

–Jio has been able to keep this upcoming device under wraps. But we are guessing the telco giant will spill a few beans ahead of the June 24 event. Until then, let’s presume that this will be a smartphone and not a feature phone.

–Jio’s partnership is not just limited to Google, the brand has also made deals with the popular chip-maker Qualcomm. Through this partnership, the telco giant aims to manufacture 5G equipment in the country. In addition to that, Jio may also procure entry-level chipsets from Qualcomm.

–The Snapdragon 480 5G is one of the cheapest 5G chipsets from Qualcomm. Hence, Jio could use it for its upcoming device. Having said there’s no solid leak to back this assumption, so we suggest you take this information with a pinch of salt.

–Reports suggest that both Jio and Google are facing issues with the manufacturing process of this phone. This has mainly to do with the supply chain issues. So it’s possible that Jio may announce the phone in the upcoming event and make it available for the consumers later in the year. However, a more recent report says that there will be limited inventory in the initial phase.

–Jio Phone 2 was launched back in 2018. This is a qwerty device with support for 4G. It is basically aimed towards the consumers who cannot afford high-end 4G smartphones. The smartphone goes for Rs 2999 only.

–The device sports a 2.4-inch TFT display with a resolution of 320x 240 pixels. Further, the phone is powered by a dual-core chipset clocked at 1GHz. This is coupled with 512MB of RAM and 4GB of onboard storage, which is expandable up to 128GB via micro-SD.

–In the camera department, the device features a 2-megapixel rear shooter whereas a 0.2-megapixel selfie camera.

–Besides this, the device gets a 2000mAh battery and KAI OS. Interestingly, the phone brings support for Facebook, YouTube and WhatsApp.

Jio Phone 5G India launch

Plenty of reports suggest that Jio Phone 5G will be launched at the upcoming June 24 event. However, the new 5G smartphone under the Jio Phone branding may not be available right away and could start shipping after a few weeks. We will have to wait for a confirmation from the company.

Jio has a history of producing entry-level devices, and the launch of Jio Phone 5G will be a step further in that direction. As far as the pricing of Jio Phone 5G is concerned, the device could be priced under Rs 5,000 in India.
