Seamless shift technology tries to eliminate some of the instability that comes from shifting up on the gearbox while a motorcycle is cornering, and the engine is under load. Honda was the first brand to introduce seamless shifting in MotoGP around 2010, and the idea was borrowed from Honda’s F1 programme, and soon other brand started introducing the same technology, which helps in faster timings, smoother gear changes and more safety, especially at high speeds and when the bike is leaned over, around a corner.

The next-generation Ducati Panigale V4S could be the first production motorcycle which will come with seamless shift gearbox

Yamaha had patented a seamless shift transmission for its Yamaha R1 in 2018, although it may not be Yamaha which will introduce the seamless shift technology on its motorcycles. According to latest reports, Ducati is working on a seamless shift system for the Ducati Panigale V4. The patent images show a seamless shift gearbox, and it could well be for a road bike, rather than a MotoGP machine which has far more sophisticated systems.

If Ducati does go ahead and introduce the new gearbox with seamless shift on the Ducati Panigale V4, it should only be a matter of time before other brands take the same route and introduce the technology. From the looks of it, seamless shifts could well be the next generation of technology on litre-class superbikes which will be introduced as updates, and across all brands
