Apple Music for Android is getting the Dolby Atmos and Lossless streaming quality soon.

Apple Music now streams a wide catalogue of music in spatial and lossless audio quality, following last week’s rollout. But the two big features, among some other small enhancements, arrived only on the iPhone, iPad, and the Mac, with support for certain AirPods and Beats earphones. Apple left out the Apple Music for Android app back at the rollout announcement. But, that is not going to be the case anymore. Apple’s new spatial and lossless audio updates are now available for Apple Music Android app.

People who have been waiting to listen to Dolby Atmos music on Apple Music, or wanting to see what lossless music sounds like, will need to either sign up for beta — because that is how the new Apple features for Apple Music are available right now — or wait until the stable release brings the two new updates. The former seems right only if you are okay with some bugs ruining your app experience every now and then. Also, registering for beta also depends on the availability of slots, so you will be lucky if you get one.

According to 9to5Google, Apple Music on an Android phone will show the Dolby Atmos label alongside a title only on compatible devices. The criteria for compatible devices is not clear but I am assuming that Android phones that have Dolby Atmos on their speakers will be able to use the feature. There are plenty of Android phones, both in mid- and high-ends, that come with Dolby Atmos support. Apple Music will allow its subscribers with one of these phones to listen to “thousands of tracks in Dolby Atmos.”

Since spatial audio is something Apple is quite proud of for having brought to Apple Music, it has curated playlists of songs in various genres and moods with all of them supporting Dolby Atmos. These playlists are featured on the home screen of the Apple Music app, so there is no chance you will miss them.

The lossless music on Apple Music is also available to Android users who are now in beta. The titles that are available in lossless quality have a label that says lossless, but they will not be turned on by default. You will have to go to Apple Music settings and change the audio quality. You have four options here:

• High Efficiency: AAC with low data usage [Cellular only]
• High Quality: AAC 256 kbps
• Lossless: ALAC up to 24-bit/48 kHz
• High-Resolution Lossless: ALAC up to 24-bit/192 kHz

The Lossless and High-Resolution Lossless will use up more data, so you need to ensure you have an unlimited data plan or are using a Wi-Fi connection to stream and download music

Apple Music for Android is also getting the Automatic Crossfade, in addition to the already available manual crossfading feature to allow for seamless music transition. There are also some music library enhancements in Apple Music. All these features are still in beta version 3.6 of Apple Music, but a stable release of these features is likely soon.
