The Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on Personal Data Protection Bill 2019 is meeting in New Delhi to discuss the draft report today. The committee is likely to adopt the draft report after the meeting.

During the previous meeting, the Opposition party members had raised objections over last-minute amendments which were brought about in the meeting.

The opposition members have claimed that all clauses with regards to the regulation of social media are being dropped. Further, the members also said that the penalty clauses which were at par with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) have also been diluted.

The opposition members had accused the government of trying to directly benefit tech giants through last-minute clauses.

The meeting, which officially began at 11 am, will see discussions in two parts. From 11 am to 1 pm the discussion will focus on the amendments brought in the last meeting, and post 2 pm the JPC will take up the matter for the adoption of the report.

Since the date for submitting dissent has already been fixed for November 24, in all likelihood the report will be adopted today and could be tabled in the upcoming winter session of the Parliament.
