On Sunday Union government brought into immediate effect  the subsidized rates of tomatoes. It is in Delhi – NCR and other locations in retail markets , the priced have been reduced  to Rs. 80/kg from Rs. 90/kg. There was a re-assessment of the situation across 500 plus points in the country. It’s a relief to the consumers as the centre has started selling tomatoes in discounted rates in national capital and few other cities from Sunday. “There has been a decrease in the wholesale prices of tomatoes due to the intervention of the government to sell it at a concessional rate of Rs 90 per kg, at several locations in the country where the prices were ruling exceptionally high,” an official statement said. It’s through  National Cooperative Consumer Federation (NCCF) and  National Level Farmers co-operative marketing organization (NAFED) , sale of tomatoes started at several points in Patna, Varanasi, Kanpur, Lucknow, Delhi , Noida, Muzaffurpur and Arrah . A government press release stated “After a re-assessment of the situation from across 500 plus points in the country, it has been decided to sell it at Rupees Eighty (80) per kg from today Sunday July 16th, 2023. Sales have started today at several points each in Delhi, NOIDA, Lucknow, Kanpur, Varanasi, Patna, Muzaffarpur and Arrah through NAFED and NCCF. It will be expanded to more cities from tomorrow depending upon the prevailing market prices at such locations.”  Millions of households in the country is had a impact of the sudden sky rocketing tomatoe prices which has lead them to restrict it’s usage. As per government data the All India average price of tomatoes is nearly Rs.117 per kg.
